AN INTRODUCTIONWriting is something that I have come to rather late in life during a period of intense self-development over a period of ten to fifteen years. In the course of this period I wrote and published five non-fiction books. A sixth one is on its way. You can find out more about this period and these books here. While putting the final touches to my final (for the time being) non-fiction book, I have ventured into fiction and hope to publish my first novel later in 2023. More information about this book is available here. When I am not writing or relaxing, I am a trauma expert by experience offering my services as a trauma coach at Trauma Coaching Online. In addition, I am a managing partner of an online provider of English language services covering everything from tuition to writing, translation, editing and beyond. If you would like to know more about these services, please feel free to visit English Services Online.

non-fictionWRITING BEGINSThe period of self-development during which I first penned a book started in 2007 when my dog, The Smudge, died. His death prompted a period of reflection on who I had become and I did not like what I saw. Trauma had turned me into an angry man who distrusted everyone. At around the same time I felt a need to find a new way of being and interacting with horses. Instinctively, I knew that it would involve a dramatic change in myself. Setting out on this journey, I resolved to document my development in a blog, which I called Horses and Humans.HORSES AND HUMANSThe Horses and Humans blog spawned three books, namely In Search of the Master Who Dances with Horses: Challenge, Growthand Being. In the course of my self-development I became an Equine Touch (a form of equine bodywork) practitioner and instructor. I also qualified as a saddle fitter. With the horses as my primary tutors, I wrote papers on horses, humans and the interaction of the species with each other along the way. These I collected and published in a book called When Horses Speak and Humans Listen.

fiction
After completing six books on various aspects of horses and humans, I have finally ventured into the realm of fiction. Yet I have done so for one reason only, to draw on events that have induced and shaped some of my traumas. As a fellow writer once revealed to me, sometimes fact is more convincingly portrayed through fiction.
Trauma CoachingSelf-development designed to enable me to overcome my trauma and become the kind of human who is able to care and interact with horses without the need for tools of restraint or instruments of coercion has spawned five non-fiction books on horses and humans and one on how to overcome trauma. It has also helped me become a trauma expert by experience and to offer my services to fellow trauma survivors as a trauma coach.
English ServicesSince 1984 I have served as a teacher of English to speakers of other languages and a translator and editor in Europe and the Antipodes, teaching students from various European and Asian countries, and piloting the launch of an English language department of which I was head through the accreditation process, as well as specialising in the translation of legal and related documents.
WritingReconnecting with the first great love of my life after more than four decades since we got engaged to be married but were forced to part has given me the inspiration and materials required to relive and write the story of a lifetime in the form of a two-volume novel on the understanding that sometimes reality is depicted more convincingly, truthfully and graphically in the form of creative fiction.

Based on a true story and spanning a period just shy of four and a half decades, from the sharp, cold gusts of the Cape south-easter to the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic in Europe, the dislocation that is Brexit, the uncertainty of transition and the challenges posed by war in Palestine, Love and Light in the Dark charts a dance of love in the face of violence, abuse and discrimination covering the great social divides of black and white, rich and poor, male and female, and Jew and gentile. Can love and light survive the dark and, if they can, is survival enough?

SELF-DEVLOPMENT AND HORSESOver time I learned much about horses, humans and myself. This produced a profound change in me, which led me to experience joy on a permanent basis for the very first time in my life. The horses responded well and I was eventually able to interact with and care for them without tools of restraint and instruments of coercion. What I learned and the conclusions which I drew, I set out in a book titled Becoming Humans for Horses. More detailed information about these books on humans and horses may be found on the Horses and Humanswebsite here.TRAUMA EXPERT BY EXPERIENCEIn my early sixties my relationship of thirty-eight and a half years broke down, leading to a distressing divorce, abandonment by dear friends of twenty to forty years standing and the loss of access to my horses and other animals. The trauma caused by this, which I managed to cope with thanks to the gift of profound self-development courtesy of the horses, caused me to reflect on my life and the havoc that trauma had wreaked in it from the age of four until I was twenty-one and then subsequently at sporadic intervals. Reconnecting with the first love of my life at about the same time occasioned even more trauma, reflection and study. I was becoming a trauma expert by experience, albeit not precisely in the same way that some trauma counsellors insist we trauma survivors be confined to.TRAUMA TROUNCED, TRANQUILLITY TRIUMPHANTThe horses taught me that the purpose of life is to be happy, nothing less. Survival is not enough. As I increasingly find self-contentment on my own and share joy with fellow humans, I have extended my understanding of my self-development, of the severely debilitating impact of trauma in my life and of how I have overcome it to find happiness. This understanding I fleshed out into the pages of a book, which has now been published. The title? Trauma Trounced Tranquillity Triumphant. You can order a copy here.
